In a way, it seems funny to me that this post is about showing people their power, because so much of our work is about reducing the power, and increasing awareness…
Maybe that’s why it’s so necessary to talk about it, because what I really mean is that you have to help people to realize how POTENT they are — and that they carry within themselves everything they need to get where they want to go!
The reason this is so important in our work is that generally speaking, people who have unavowed dreams feel impotent to attain them. If they felt potent… they would be working on getting there.
When people arrive at your doorstep with little hope of “being helped,” in effect, your job — as a Feldenkrais® practitioner they are considering working with — is to help them realize that they already have what it takes to get what they yearn for!
There are a number of specific steps that are important in doing this, and to be honest, it’s way beyond the scope of a blog post. I want to give you the general idea, though. You need to show them in ONE very clear, completely unmistakable example, that they have the capacity to change something they’d been unaware of — and that they now understand is the key to getting what they want. Once they recognize that, they realize that it’s their own steam that will carry them to fulfilling this dream… and the next one, and the one after that, too!
You can do this easily when you fully understand who you are in the consultation. If you are hungry and greedy for a client, you won’t be able to show them how powerful they are — that might mean that you will lose a client. When you can stand in the fullness of who you are, and come from a place where their well-being is more important than your bank balance, it’s easy!
Tomorrow… we’ll talk about taking one more step toward that place, where you are the practitioner who has the practice you want!

Allison, this is such an important concept. When I realized that ONE thing was so powerful I was set free! My consultations became more meaningful for me and my clients, and after a year and a half, I still have not had anyone tell me they did not want to continue! Thank you for what this has done for my clients!
Nancy, you’ve got a remarkable track record with your first-time clients! I’m so glad this is a part of what you’re doing, because it makes everything so clear to your clients!
Hi Allison,
The idea of ONE thing with a clear intention, a relief to me and everything to my client.
I really like the word “Potent” which brings the feeling of possibility versus “Power” which is so overused and instills the idea of work.
Thanks so much,
Heather

Heather, I always struggle with words. On the one hand, I think they shouldn’t matter. On the other hand, I think they’re really important. One the things that’s been hard for me is to let go of what I think people should be thinking about and listen to what they ARE thinking about. Headlines are an important place to pay attention to this, because you don’t have time to introduce a concept… if you’re lucky, you’ve said a word they recognize and they respond to it. Once they come through the door, there’s time to get them to think another thought…
The guy who helped me with my transfer from blogger to wordpress must have followed your philosophy. He did the basic transfer, and as he was doing some behind the scenes stuff he told me to play around with different settings and features so I could get a feel for it. I was so scared, I kind of wanted him to hold my hand a little more but he made me feel confident that I couldn’t mess up anything too bad, and even If I did he was there to help and it would just be a learning process. I was hesitant at first but I kept digging deeper and deeper and along the way did mess up a few things but I was able to figure them out on my own. He could have charged a lot more and and just asked me how I wanted stuff, but I appreciated the chance to learn on my own – knowing he was there to help!
Thanks for sharing a great story, Diane — I think a lot of people are afraid they’ll break something on their computer, and feeling confident and capable is irreplaceable!
This is a very inspirational post. I see how this ONE thing can help me in my business as well.
I think the first step is showing people THEY CAN do it. And they are in fact OK and doing it correctly.
Laura, I’m glad you found a way to apply it in your own business. Be sure to check out tomorrow’s post — it’s about the next step — where you find out why you aren’t giving away the store when you show them they’re powerful!
I love this idea, and have been using it with greater potency since your course…in fact another new series client signed up yesterday!
Just keeping it to one clear example and assisting them to have an understanding/awareness of their own power to change!
Love your posts.

Thanks, Erik! It’s a lot easier when you feel confident in the steps, and know that you don’t diminish yourself by helping another person to feel the real power of their own being! So glad you’re on this ride with us!
