Whack!!
I got added to a closed FB group
… by someone I barely know
… along with 800 of their other “friends”
True… I didn’t know it existed.
And I imagine they think I’m thrilled–but you know what? This person doesn’t know me well enough to know that I’m definitely not thrilled.
So what did I do? I went immediately to the group and clicked the buttons to leave the group and not be added again.
Take the time to learn about social media
If you’re going to use social media, please take the time to find out how to use it well. For example, if you think people you know would LOVE a group you belong to, invite them to join–and when you write a personal note inviting them, make sure you tell them why you love the group and what they’re going to love about it.
Adding people to a group without asking is no different than putting your friends on my mailing list as a “surprise” or because you think they “need” it–ew! It does nothing to build a relationship between you and the other person, and it can actually damage the person who owns the group or sends those emails.
Here’s a model… and a real invitation!
