Did you know that a lot of hands-on practitioners feel isolated?
It makes sense, actually, when you think about it. For one thing, we tend to identify as either “introverted” or “shy”—or both.
For one thing, we tend to identify as either “introverted” or “shy”—or both.
For another, our work often puts us in a room with one other person… and we’re not there to have a conversation.
Add to that the fact that no matter what modality you trained in, you probably feel more comfortable with other practitioners who have the same background you do… there’s less explaining, more just “being.” And how many of those are within “Let’s have tea!” distance?
No wonder conferences are such joyous events, filled with hugs and reunions, making new friends and forging new alliances.
Don’t be afraid of Facebook
You have lots of colleagues online, and probably lots you don’t know yet. Facebook is a great place to meet your colleagues, and it’s a good place to get known and build friendships that make you feel less alone. In fact, you can connect with people from around the world—people who may be very different from you but share a philosophy, body of knowledge or outlook on life.
Often you can find colleagues on Facebook by searching for your modality, and many modalities have groups for practitioners only. If your modality doesn’t have one, why not start one?
When you friend colleagues, why not include a short note to let them know who you are. Practitioners are often wary of accepting friend requests from people they don’t know, and you can make it more likely that they’ll want to be connected if you give them some context for the friendship. I will often say something like “Are you a (your modality) practitioner, too? If so, I’d love to be FB friends!”
And if you ARE on Facebook, and we’re not connected, please friend me!
